Diane Wilson Tietjen

I lived in Ucon, Idaho on my grandpa Guy Dodge’s farm until I was 12 years old.   After my parents' divorce, my mother, Lodema Dodge Wilson, moved me and my four brothers and sisters to Boise, Idaho.   I have loved to draw since I was young, and when I found that the junior high school offered art classes, I was elated. In Boise I went to East Junior High and Boise High School. I took art classes for every elective.

In j
unior high I won second place in the "Hire the Handicapped" poster contest. Winners were chosen from all the Boise schools both high school and junior high. In 1968, I came to Ricks College on an art scholarship, so art became my major. I only made it through one year of college when I decided to pursue my main mission in life, which was to be a wife and mother. I married Ron Tietjen, a young man from Rexburg. Since Ron was a part-owner of El-Gene’s TV & Appliance, we made our home here.

Throughout the years, while raising 10 wonderful children, I have tried to keep up on my art skills by taking some
art classes at the college, and sometimes through the Continuing Education Department. I have taken classes from some of the very best: Robert Auth, Oliver Parson, Arlo Cole, Leon Parson, Ken Anderson, Richard Bird, Del Parson, and Nolan Parson.

Ron and I have seven sons and three daughters. At present we have 34 grandchildren, and all but four of them live here in Rexburg. They love learning new
art skills at Grandma’s house.

I have been an active member of the Upper Valley Art Guild since its beginning. I have served as Treasurer and am now serving as Secretary. The Guild has given me some great opportunities to display my art and receive more instructions. I am always ready to learn more.

I have painted mostly with oils, but during the last six years I have been trying my hand at watercolor -- a medium i very much enjoy using.

I had always dreamed of painting the Idaho Falls Temple since it was, for many years, "My Temple,"
but I never got it done. When the Rexburg Temple was built, I set my dreams to painting it. I was finally able to fulfill this dream last November. My painting, entitled "Gathering the Wheat from the Tares," will be displayed in the Conference Room of the Chamber of Commerce during the Month of February, 2010.

I encourage everyone to come to the guild and see the many fabulous works of art done by our own local residents.
